Dr Maria’s Presentation - Friday, Oct. 15 Subspecialty Day
Muscat Eye Laser Center who has always believed in giving world class solutions to any eye problems delivers it by keeping abreast with the latest technologies of the future. Muscat Eye Laser Center is privileged to be associated with Schwind Eye Tech Solutions who offer innovative and sophisticated technology that is par excellence; Muscat Eye Laser Center therefore is already in the future!

AAO (American Academy of Ophthalmology) is the platform to showcase the worlds best to the world, during which Dr Maria Clara Arbelaez, Medical Director of Muscat Eye Laser gave her presentation “Future of the Schwind System” to an audience of over 5000 renowned doctors and surgeons on the AAO Subspecialty Day.
In her presentation, Dr. Maria introduced the newest innovations from Schwind- the SmartTech nanosecond laser and the 750 Hz version of its Amaris excimer laser system. The 750 Hz laser combines speed, safety and also features six-dimensional, active and passive 1,050 Hz eye tracking. Besides its use in refractive surgery, the laser can be used also in therapeutic applications such as lamellar keratoplasty and treatment of presbyopia (correction to get rid of reading glasses) which is Presbymax.
The PresbyMAX module makes it possible to safely treat emmetropia, myopia and hyperopia, as well as astigmatism in patients whose accommodative response is limited (those patient who need reading glasses). In addition, she also presented the therapeutic application of the SCHWIND AMARIS with Pachymetry-Assisted Lamellar Keratoplasty (PALK) or partial corneal transplant.
Talking about the future, Dr Maria presented the Smart tech nanosecond laser which is based on nanosecond laser technology. This system, which is now under development, is much less complex than the femtosecond lasers. It uses a short wavelength of 355 nm and has pulse duration of 0.6ns and a 150 kHz repetition rate; the focal-spot size of the laser is one third of the spot size of standard femtosecond lasers. This low-density plasma feature combined with the short wavelength leads to more precise cuts and smoother cutting surfaces in LASIK flap procedures, as well as an increased safety in flap preparation. Besides its use in refractive surgery, the SmartTech Laser can also be applied in other therapeutic applications including lamellar keratoplasty as well as corneal rings and corneal inlays.
