MELC truly becoming a center of excellence and learning.

Muscat Eye Laser Center recently played host to two leading Iranian ophthalmologists, in the latest in a growing trend of visits by international eye surgeons to Oman’s pre-eminent eye care centre. Dr. Mir Mohammed Sadeghi, MD, Ophthalmologist and Dr. Soheil Adib Moghaddam, MD, Ophthalmologist and specialist in cataract and refractive surgery, spent a week in Muscat primarily to get acquainted with Muscat Eye Laser Center’s use of cutting-edge technology and surgical techniques.
Of particular interest to the visiting pair was the Center’s expertise in performing eye surgeries with the aid of a revolutionary laser called ‘Schwind Amaris’.
“We came here to observe at first-hand the surgical procedures employed by Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez, whom we regard as a pioneer in refractive surgery in the region. We also had the opportunity to watch Dr. Maria perform surgeries with the use of the ‘Schwind Amaris’, which has also been newly installed in our clinic back home in Tehran,” Dr Sadhegi remarked.
Accomplished ophthalmologists in their own right, Dr. Sadeghi and Dr. Moghaddam are attached to the Bina Eye Hospital, a new offshoot of Bina Hospital, a well-known healthcare research facility in Tehran.
“Now that we have familiarised ourselves with the technology of the ‘Schwind Amaris’ under Dr. Maria’s expert guidance, we are eager to put our own ‘Schwind Amaris’ to successful use once we get back home to Iran. We hope to perform our very surgical operation involving the use of this laser in about two weeks,” Dr Moghaddam added.
The visit by the Iranian team comes close on the heels of a similar visit to Muscat by a French-based ophthalmologist about a fortnight ago. During his weeklong stay, Dr. Patrick Humbert, a specialist in laser refractive surgery, observed Dr. Maria conducting complex Femto-LASIK and keratoconus surgeries at Muscat Eye Laser Center.

Muscat Eye Laser embraces new innovations in corneal transplant surgery

10 December 2011, Muscat: Muscat Eye Laser Center, the Sultanate’s leading eye-care clinic, is combining technological advances in corneal transplantation surgery, cutting-edge surgical techniques and superior in-house expertise to dramatically improve the quality of life for patients with corneal pathology. Until recently, the procedure of choice for most patients with severe diseased or damaged corneas was to undergo a full-thickness corneal transplant (also known as a penetrating keratoplasty), in which the entire cornea is replaced, even if only a portion of the cornea is diseased. While this procedure is still being carried out at Muscat Eye Laser Center for those who have severely damaged cornea, ophthalmologists at the Center have also mastered new innovative procedures that allow for the removal and replacement of only the affected layer of the corneal tissue. The upshot, says Dr. Juan G. Graviria, Scientific Director, is that patients now enjoy better outcomes, faster r...

Muscat Eye Laser Center goes high-tech with acquisition of Avedro system

19 November 2011, Muscat: Reinforcing its position at the cutting-edge of eye-care services in the Sultanate, Muscat Eye Laser Center has announced the addition of the breakthrough Avedro System to its ever-expanding technological capabilities in the treatment of corneal problems. The Avedro System, coveted by the world’s leading eye-care clinics, is currently the equipment of choice in the treatment of keratoconus, a degenerative disorder of the cornea , in which there is a progressive change of its curvature, leading to an abnormal conical shape . The Avedro KXL System offers a superfast, safe and non-invasive alternative to stop the progression of keratoconus and, in many cases, to avoid the need of penetrating keratoplasty (cornea transplant). “The system is designed to perform accelerated corneal cross-linking procedure (KXL) that represents a qualitative leap over the traditional corneal collagen cross-linking procedure. While the latter procedure usually ...
