Muscat Eye Laser Center to host Professor Takayuki Akahoshi from Japan, the world’s leading cataract surgeon

The convergence of top-notch international talent and the superior capabilities of Muscat Eye Laser Center is making possible the delivery of exceptional eye surgical care services here in the Sultanate. Muscat Eye Laser Center has signed up an exclusive partnership with world-renowned eye surgeon, Prof. Takayuki Akahoshi from Japan to provide people with an opportunity to avail world-class cataract surgery at Muscat Eye Laser Center. This is another step that reinforces the Center’s philosophy of offering exemplary solutions to eye problems.

Prof. Akahoshi has devoted much of his professional life to the refinement of cataract surgeries to make them safer and reliable for the patients. Presently, Prof. Akahoshi serves at the Mitsui Memorial Hospital in Tokyo as the Director of Ophthalmology. He is also credited with contributing to the invention of the pre-chopper cataract surgery instrument, a device that divides the nucleus through a tiny incision and greatly reduces phacoemulsification time and ultrasound energy. Following the introduction of this device in leading eye care institutions around the world, cataract surgeries have become far easier and safer. He has to his credit over 70,000 successful surgeries and has operated on several dignitaries including heads of state.

Prof. Akahoshi is also the recipient of many of the coveted recognitions in his field of work, including the Grand Prix Prize at ASCRS (American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery) and ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery) for the ground-breaking Knuckle Tip that increases safety and efficacy in cataract surgery.

For Muscat Eye Laser Center, the opportunity to host one of the world’s most celebrated eye surgeons is a singular privilege, says Mr. Sameer Al Awam, CEO of Muscat Eye Laser Center. “We are deeply honoured to be hosting someone as distinguished as Prof. Akahoshi. His visit, along with that of other renowned international specialists hosted by this Center from time to time, will also contribute to the development of this institution as a Center of learning and excellence in ophthalmology.

In what is considered to be a significant step towards the future of private eye care services in Oman, Prof. Akahoshi will make a three-day visit to Muscat Eye Laser Center from 28th to 30th December 2010 to offer his much sought after expertise in cataract surgeries. Given the limited duration of his visit, patients are urged to book their appointments at the earliest to avoid disappointment.

Jointly established by Sameer Al Awam, CEO and Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez, Medical Director in April 2002, Muscat Eye Laser Center is Oman’s leading eye care centre. Centrally located in Shatti Al Qurum, the clinic specialises in various ophthalmic procedures using advanced technology and techniques. The specialist team is led by Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez, an internationally recognised corneal transplant and refractive surgeon with over 20 years of experience in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Far East and the Middle East. At present Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez has completed over 50,000 successful surgeries.

Recently renovated, the centre maintains the highest international standards by enhancing its facilities, not only by creating new and modern consultation and fully sterilized treatment spaces, but also by acquiring the most advanced technology in diagnosis and surgical equipments. Muscat Eye Laser Center is the only eye care center in Oman with the ISO 9001:2000 certification.

While this procedure is still being carried out at Muscat Eye Laser Center for those who have severely damaged cornea, ophthalmologists at the Center have also mastered new innovative procedures that allow for the removal and replacement of only the affected layer of the corneal tissue. The upshot, says Dr. Juan G. Graviria, Scientific Director, is that patients now enjoy better outcomes, faster r...
