Papers presented by Dr Maria Clara Arbelaez at ASCRS lauded

The Annual American Academy of Cataract and Refractive Surgeon’s (ASCRS) Symposium and Congress was recently held in San Diego where Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez, Medical Director, Muscat Eye Laser Center, was the only specialist from the Middle East to participate.

Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez presented two papers at the symposium on ‘Ablation Volume’ and ‘Myopic High Speed Excimer’. In the later, Dr Arbelaez compared the results of myopic LASIK with LASEK with the Schwind Amaris 750S on 225 patients. The results showed amazing precision of the intended correction with 93 per cent of patients achieving results within + or – 0.25D and 100 per cent of patients with + or – 0.50D at six months using either LASIK or LASEK. Furthermore, the results indicated a significant increase in contrast sensitivity (a measurement of visual quality) at six months. The results reiterated the high precision and safety using the Schwind Amaris 750S Excimer Laser.

Founded in 1974, ASCRS is considered to be physicians’ primary source of up-to-date information on scientific developments within the field as well as the regulatory decisions that affect ophthalmic practices. Just under 7,000 attendees from around the world registered for the annual meeting that was held in San Diego this year.

“It is always enriching to participate in symposiums and conferences such as ASCRS as it provides us, the doctors, to share our experiences as well as augment our knowledge and keep abreast of the latest in technology,” said Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez. Her participation in symposiums and involvement in developmental research has augmented her knowledge making her one of the most reputed in the field of ophthalmology across the globe.

Jointly established by Sameer Al Awam and Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez in April 2002, Muscat Eye Laser Center is Oman’s leading eye care center specialising in refractive surgery using advanced technology and procedures. Centrally located in Qurum, the center has two fully equipped operating theatres, seven consultation rooms, nine diagnostic and four preparation rooms. It has recently been accredited with the ISO 9001:2008 certification for quality system.

The specialist team is led by Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez, an internationally recognised corneal transplant and refractive surgeon from Colombia with over 20 years of experience in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East. She is known for her precision having performed over 50,000 successful surgeries. For more information, visit the website www.muscateye.com or the blog http://muscateye.blogspot.com/

Muscat Eye Laser embraces new innovations in corneal transplant surgery

10 December 2011, Muscat: Muscat Eye Laser Center, the Sultanate’s leading eye-care clinic, is combining technological advances in corneal transplantation surgery, cutting-edge surgical techniques and superior in-house expertise to dramatically improve the quality of life for patients with corneal pathology. Until recently, the procedure of choice for most patients with severe diseased or damaged corneas was to undergo a full-thickness corneal transplant (also known as a penetrating keratoplasty), in which the entire cornea is replaced, even if only a portion of the cornea is diseased. While this procedure is still being carried out at Muscat Eye Laser Center for those who have severely damaged cornea, ophthalmologists at the Center have also mastered new innovative procedures that allow for the removal and replacement of only the affected layer of the corneal tissue. The upshot, says Dr. Juan G. Graviria, Scientific Director, is that patients now enjoy better outcomes, faster r...

Muscat Eye Laser Center goes high-tech with acquisition of Avedro system

19 November 2011, Muscat: Reinforcing its position at the cutting-edge of eye-care services in the Sultanate, Muscat Eye Laser Center has announced the addition of the breakthrough Avedro System to its ever-expanding technological capabilities in the treatment of corneal problems. The Avedro System, coveted by the world’s leading eye-care clinics, is currently the equipment of choice in the treatment of keratoconus, a degenerative disorder of the cornea , in which there is a progressive change of its curvature, leading to an abnormal conical shape . The Avedro KXL System offers a superfast, safe and non-invasive alternative to stop the progression of keratoconus and, in many cases, to avoid the need of penetrating keratoplasty (cornea transplant). “The system is designed to perform accelerated corneal cross-linking procedure (KXL) that represents a qualitative leap over the traditional corneal collagen cross-linking procedure. While the latter procedure usually ...
