Free check-ups for Orphan kids during Ramadan

Muscat Eye Laser Center conducts free Ramadan eye check-up for orphan kids
22 August 2010, Muscat: In keeping with the Holy Month’s spirit of giving, Muscat Eye Laser Center, the Sultanate’s leading eye-care center, recently organised a free eye check-up for the children of Al Khoudh Orphanage in Muscat Governorate.
A total of 93 beautiful children of ages four and above had their eyes examined by the Center’s optometrist. Besides checking their eyes for any vision impairment or eye diseases, the team also made a careful assessment of each child’s need, if any, for visual aids to help remedy any vision deficiencies. Over the coming days, children from the Orphanage requiring further diagnostic and treatment services will be brought in batches to the Center’s modern clinic at Qurum.
After a comprehensive examination by the Center’s professional team of doctors, kids that need correction will be prescribed corrective spectacles, courtesy of Muscat Eye Laser Center. As surgical intervention can only take place from age 18 onwards, any non-surgical eye-care services will also be treated free-of-charge at the clinic for these children.

“There is nothing more precious than the gift of sight. With this in mind, and in keeping with the spirit of Ramadan, we wanted to reach out and make a difference in our own small way. We hope to instil in these children a greater appreciation of sense of sight and with it a brighter hope for the future,” commented Dr Maria Clara Arbelaez, an internationally recognised corneal transplant and refractive surgeon, who has successfully performed over 50,000 successful eye surgeries during a professional career spanning more than 20 years.
Jointly established by Sameer Al Awam and Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez in April 2002, Muscat Eye Laser Center specialises in refractive surgery using advanced technology and procedures. Centrally located in Qurum, the center has two fully equipped operating theatres, six consultation and meeting rooms, six diagnostic and four preparation rooms.

Muscat Eye Laser embraces new innovations in corneal transplant surgery

10 December 2011, Muscat: Muscat Eye Laser Center, the Sultanate’s leading eye-care clinic, is combining technological advances in corneal transplantation surgery, cutting-edge surgical techniques and superior in-house expertise to dramatically improve the quality of life for patients with corneal pathology. Until recently, the procedure of choice for most patients with severe diseased or damaged corneas was to undergo a full-thickness corneal transplant (also known as a penetrating keratoplasty), in which the entire cornea is replaced, even if only a portion of the cornea is diseased. While this procedure is still being carried out at Muscat Eye Laser Center for those who have severely damaged cornea, ophthalmologists at the Center have also mastered new innovative procedures that allow for the removal and replacement of only the affected layer of the corneal tissue. The upshot, says Dr. Juan G. Graviria, Scientific Director, is that patients now enjoy better outcomes, faster r...

19 November 2011, Muscat: Reinforcing its position at the cutting-edge of eye-care services in the Sultanate, Muscat Eye Laser Center has announced the addition of the breakthrough Avedro System to its ever-expanding technological capabilities in the treatment of corneal problems. The Avedro System, coveted by the world’s leading eye-care clinics, is currently the equipment of choice in the treatment of keratoconus, a degenerative disorder of the cornea , in which there is a progressive change of its curvature, leading to an abnormal conical shape . The Avedro KXL System offers a superfast, safe and non-invasive alternative to stop the progression of keratoconus and, in many cases, to avoid the need of penetrating keratoplasty (cornea transplant). “The system is designed to perform accelerated corneal cross-linking procedure (KXL) that represents a qualitative leap over the traditional corneal collagen cross-linking procedure. While the latter procedure usually ...
