Muscat Eye Laser Center celebrates 10 years of eye care excellence

>> Monday, June 11, 2012

9 June 2012, Muscat: Muscat Eye Laser Center toasted a decade of exemplary services as the nation’s foremost private eye care clinic with a pledge to evolve into a centre of eye-care excellence in the Gulf region.
At a ceremony to mark the anniversary, Medical Director and co-founder Dr Maria Clara Arbelaez unveiled plans for the clinic’s eventual relocation to a spacious, state-of-the-art, multi-storey facility at Bausher designed and equipped to cater to Muscat Eye Laser’s burgeoning caseload and an expanding portfolio of eye-care services.
It has been a momentous ten years for Dr Arbelaez, a globally renowned corneal surgeon, who along with CEO and co-founder Mr. Sameer Al Awam, oversaw the growth of Muscat Eye Laser Center into Oman’s largest and best established eye-care services provider in the private sector.
Through her commitment to providing an exceptionally high level of patient care, Dr Arbelaez saw her practice grow from a team of seven members in 2002 to around 50 staff today, comprising a full complement of corneal and refractive surgeons, anterior segment specialists, ophthalmologists, anaesthesia consultants, technicians and paramedics. To extend the best services to its patients, the Center has also entered into an exclusive partnership with internationally renowned eye specialists. It presently covers an unrivalled offering in specialist surgical, LASIK and other corrective procedures many of them pioneered by Muscat Eye Laser Center in Oman.
Keeping abreast of clinical and technological advancements in the field of corrective eye care globally, Muscat Eye Laser Center introduced cutting-edge procedures in Oman as soon as they became the norm in well-established international markets. Consequently, patients in the Sultanate have always enjoyed access to the best in corrective eye-care services that have consistently placed Muscat Eye Laser Center at the very top of the industry.
Along with superior patient care and quality standards, innovation has been the all-encompassing credo of the clinic’s quest for success over the past decade. In line with this philosophy, Muscat Eye Laser Center introduced a succession of new corrective procedures that helped speed up healing and visual recovery and minimise discomfort for patients.
Thus, starting with cataract surgery, corneal transplants and implantable contact lens surgery in 2004, the clinic embraced leading-edge corrective procedures as and when they came on the market. A year later, intrastomal corneal ring surgery was added to the clinic’s offerings for the treatment of keratoconus.
The year 2006 saw the introduction of a flurry of new procedures – all groundbreaking at the time – including the corneal collagen cross-linking treatment for keratoconus, Pachymetry assisted lamellar keratoplasty (PALK) for corneal transplants, SLT and Laser Iridotomy for treatment of glaucoma and Focal Photocoagulation for some retinal conditions.
With the addition of a number of laser-assisted surgical procedures, Muscat Eye Laser Center’s dominant position as a provider of corrective eye-care services was sealed. Femtosecond laser assisted LASIK surgery was introduced in 2008, along with Femtolaser assisted intrastromal corneal ring surgery. Complementing these procedures was the revolutionary LASIK / LASEK combined with accelerated crosslinking procedure along with Partial Thickness Corneal Transplant Endothelial Keratoplasty.
In conjunction with the introduction of these modern procedures were regular equipment upgrades aimed at ensuring the clinic’s position on the leading-edge of corrective eye-care services in Oman. Its high-tech capabilities are reflected in the acquisition of a Pentacam Scheimpflug Imaging System for anterior segment imaging, the Amaris 750 Excimer Laser – the pride and joy of the clinic, the Heidelberg Retinal Tomographer for the imaging of both the anterior and posterior segment of the eye, and the Sirius imaging system. Adding to this sophisticated array is the newly procured Avedro system for combined LASIK / LASEK with accelerated crosslinking.
But the most notable milestone of the past decade pertains to the extraordinary achievements of Dr Maria Arbelaez who has over 60,000 eye surgeries to her growing record, a tally unmatched in Oman and perhaps in the wider Gulf region as well. Acknowledged as an international authority on refractive eye surgery, Dr Arbelaez has been frequently invited to present at leading international conferences and symposiums attended by prominent figures from around the world. She also continues to conduct research and studies that have contributed to a better understanding of the science of laser vision correction.
While the Center has progressed on to provide the best services in the GCC in Muscat, it has also been aware of its social responsibility. On recommendation of the Chamber of Commerce, it has regularly sponsored deserving students for higher studies. This year alone, five students have been sponsored. In addition, it has also funded employees for courses to further improve their skills.
On a bigger scale, the Center put Oman on the map by inviting Schwind to host its annual user meet in the Sultanate in 2010 that was attended by 150 delegates from 45 countries. At the conference, the Schwind CEO acknowledged Dr. Maria’s input in developing advanced technology in refractive surgery and commended her global reputation as one of the finest eye laser surgeons in the world.
“On this important anniversary, we have a lot of people to thank, including our staff and suppliers, who believed in our practice and helped us grow and prosper. But our success would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful patients. They are the reason why we continue to work hard to improve our quality and service delivery with the aim of providing them with an exceptional eye-care experience,” Mr. Sameer Al Awam commented.

Muscat Eye Laser Center’s Medical Director showcases research work at prestigious US symposium

>> Sunday, May 20, 2012

Reinforcing her credentials as an international authority on refractive eye surgery, Muscat Eye Laser Center’s Medical Director was invited to present a pair of scientific papers as the Annual Symposium and Congress of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in the United States recently.
Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez’s inclusion in a roster of top-flight presenters from around the world attests to her standing as an internationally recognised expert in the field of cataract and refractive eye surgery.
As the world’s signature forum on anterior segment surgery, the Annual Symposium and Congress of the ASCRS attracts specialists on the frontline of ophthalmic research and practice from around the globe. An estimated 7,000 eye-care professionals registered to attend this year’s five-day-long event in Chicago.
In the first of two appearances at the prestigious forum, Dr Maria presented a case study based on a yearlong follow-up of a keratoconic patient with ‘Lamellar Corneal Grafting after Pachymetry-Assisted Laser Ablation’.  Through this study, she demonstrated the precision of the excimer laser Amaris 750S to achieve deep lamelar cornea trepination.
The procedure, Dr Maria emphasised, has many advantages in comparison with other techniques, as it delivers a more precise cut in terms of centration, diameter site, and thickness. At the same time, it eliminates the risk of corneal perforation and the need for conversion to penetrating keratoplasty. The visual results at the end of a year-long follow-up have been amazing: the patient’s uncorrected visual acuity had improved from ‘counting fingers’ to 20/40, while his best corrected visual acuity was enhanced from 20/40 to 20/30.
The second paper dealt with the findings of a lengthy and comprehensive research study she led along with her medical and optometric team at Muscat Eye Laser Center. In her presentation, Dr Maria outlined a set of successful predictive factors in the treatment of keratoconus using kerarings. Based on the predictors found for uncorrected visual acuity improvement, patients with mild to moderate keratoconus should have potentially good outcomes, while poor outcomes can be anticipated in cases of advanced keratoconus. These significant predictors and threshold levels found for kerarings serve as practical guidelines for surgeons because they define criteria for success, the reputed specialist stressed.
Significantly, the ASCRS Symposium offered yet another platform for Dr Maria to showcase her research work on the cutting-edge of refractive eye surgery. Over a career spanning two decades, the highly respected surgeon has undertaken a number of research initiatives that have contributed to a better understanding and development of advanced surgical techniques.
"It's very important for professionals like us to remain engaged with research while staying on top of the current trends in refractive surgery both from the scientific and technological perspectives. After all, patients expect excellent outcomes, and are increasingly looking to us to provide painless and hassle-free surgical solutions to their vision problems. The ASCRS forum was an excellent opportunity not only to share knowledge with my peers, but to learn from them as well,” she commented.

National sports hero opts for Z-LASIK surgery at Muscat Eye Laser Center

>> Sunday, March 25, 2012

Oman’s top racing driver, Ahmad al Harthy, recently turned to the Sultanate’s leading eye-care clinic, the Muscat Eye Laser Center, for a surgical procedure designed in no small measure to keep him at the top of his game on the racing circuit.

The international sports star, whose amazing feats continue to inspire a generation of young Omani sportsmen and women, chose Muscat Eye Laser Centre’s revolutionary Z-Lasik procedure to enhance his vision to the razor sharp levels deemed critical for success on the racetrack.

In a sport that demands the ultimate in skill, perfect eyesight is as much a requisite for success as endurance, concentration and speed – an imperative that prompted the iconic sportsman to consider corrective vision at Oman’s most prestigious surgical eye-care services provider.

Z-Lasik, widely popularised by Muscat Eye Laser Center in Oman, is a safe, painless but sophisticated procedure that delivers amazing results without any of the complications typically associated with conventional eye surgeries.

Hailed as the most advanced innovation in bladeless surgery, the procedure involves the use of a high-frequency laser to correct a variety of refractive eye problems, including Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism and Presbyopia among other eye diseases. After thorough investigation the patient is carefully chosen for the surgery which usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. Besides, the risk of complication is greatly reduced as compared to previous techniques, while the quality of post-operative vision is better than with any other method.

For professionals like Ahmad, who lay great store by quality and excellence, Muscat Eye Laser Center has been the clinic of choice for their corrective procedure conducted by the Center’s Medical Director, Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez, who has performed more than 60,000 successful eye surgeries. “Muscat Eye Laser was the natural choice for me because of their class-leading reputation, professional competence, unrivalled facilities and superior standards,” stated Ahmed Al Harthy.

Staffed by a team of top-flight corrective vision practitioners and equipped with state-of-the-art clinical facilities, the Center’s surgical eye-care services are truly world-class as attested by the conferment last year of the globally recognized ISO 9001:2008 certification.

Given the close alignments of their respective visions for excellence, Muscat Eye Laser Center recently announced its sponsorship support for Ahmad as he embarks on a third successive season of participation in the world renowned Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship. As Commercial Partner, the Center will extend its backing to Oman’s champion racer as he returns to compete in the Pro-Am 1 Class of the UK’s premier one-make sports car championship this year.

Mr Sameer Al Awam, CEO of Muscat Eye Laser Center commented: “We are honoured not only by Ahmad’s decision to undergo Z-Lasik surgery at our clinic, but also by the opportunity to be part of his quest for fame at the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. We look forward to an exciting partnership as we bid our national sports hero every success in this prestigious championship.”
