How Does Your Vision Change During Pregnancy?

Can Pregnancy Affect My Vision?

During pregnancy many changes occur in a women’s body, and vision is not an exception. Pregnant women can have their vision affected during their pregnancy but these symptoms usually go away after giving birth.

In this blog we will explain how and why vision can be compromised while expecting and what changes can indicate serious problems that require professional care immediately.

 Dry Eyes

Some pregnant women experience dry eyes; this condition can be very discomforting but it can be easily treated with artificial tears. Consult your Ophthalmologist to prescribe the best artificial tears during pregnancy. Beware not all artificial tears are suitable for expectant mothers.

Refractive Changes (Blurry Vision)

It is possible that you face refractive changes during pregnancy and this is due to the alterations in hormones; these can alter the power you need on your eyeglasses.  Do not rush to change your prescription, consult your Ophthalmologist first as he/she might recommend you to wait a few weeks after delivery to make any decision.

Sensitivity to light

Some pregnant women experience migraines due to hormonal changes and this causes sensitivity to light. It’s important you talk to your doctor before taking any prescription or non-prescription migraine headache medication

Puffy Eyes

Puffy eyes are common in expectant mothers due to fluid retention. If you notice any unusual puffiness contact your Doctor immediately as this can be a sign of Preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by swelling, weight gain, high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ such as liver and kidneys.

Pre Existing Conditions

If you have been diagnosed with Keratoconus, Glaucoma or Diabetes it is very important you inform your Ophthalmologist you are expecting. Any vision changes must be closely monitored to prevent serious complications.

Heartfelt letter from one of our Doctors

Have you wondered what it's like to work at Muscat Eye Laser Center?   On today's blog Dr. Dita Sekito tells us how her arrival was at Muscat Eye Laser Center and what she saw about the clinic that made her stay much longer that what she had planned.    “It was in the year 2006 that I had the opportunity to work abroad. I had this offer to work as a General Ophthalmologist in Oman. During that time, I did not even know where Oman is and that there was a country called Oman. I came for the interview unprepared and I was even not properly attired. The first thing that struck me was that the person who was going to interview me was the owner himself. The man I met was Mr. Sameer Al Awam. Little did I know that this person I met would play a great role for the next years of my life. The interview went well and in the afternoon Dr. Maria who is the medical director interviewed me. Right away after the interview, I searched the internet about Oman, Muscat Eye Las...

Muscat Eye Laser embraces new innovations in corneal transplant surgery

10 December 2011, Muscat: Muscat Eye Laser Center, the Sultanate’s leading eye-care clinic, is combining technological advances in corneal transplantation surgery, cutting-edge surgical techniques and superior in-house expertise to dramatically improve the quality of life for patients with corneal pathology. Until recently, the procedure of choice for most patients with severe diseased or damaged corneas was to undergo a full-thickness corneal transplant (also known as a penetrating keratoplasty), in which the entire cornea is replaced, even if only a portion of the cornea is diseased. While this procedure is still being carried out at Muscat Eye Laser Center for those who have severely damaged cornea, ophthalmologists at the Center have also mastered new innovative procedures that allow for the removal and replacement of only the affected layer of the corneal tissue. The upshot, says Dr. Juan G. Graviria, Scientific Director, is that patients now enjoy better outcomes, faster r...
